Funerary procession of Teodora Alonzo in 1911

indiohistorian: This is a photo of the funerary procession of Teodora Alonzo in 1911. She’s the mother of the Philippine national hero Jose Rizal. Last Tuesday was the centenary of her death. It’s ennobling to remember how Teodora Alonzo reacted when the new American colonizers offered her a lifetime pension. She said, “My family has never been patriotic for the money. If the government has plenty of funds and does not know what to do with them, it’s better to reduce the taxes.” A brave woman. A great Filipina.
